Paperback: 328 pages Publisher: Rodale; 1 edition (Jun 13 2006) Language: English Our climate crisis may at times appear to be happening slowly, but in fact it is happening very quickly-and has become a true planetary emergency. The Chinese expression for crisis consists of two characters. The first is a symbol for danger; the second is a symbol for opportunity. In order to face down the danger that is stalking us and move through it, we first have to recognize that we are facing a crisis. So why is it that our leaders seem not to hear such clarion warnings? Are they resisting the truth because they know that the moment they acknowledge it, they will face a moral imperative to act? Is it simply more convenient to ignore the warnings? Perhaps, but inconvenient truths do not go away just because they are not seen. Indeed, when they are responded to, their significance doesnt diminish; it grows. -- Al Gore
Paperback: 240 pages Publisher: Bloomsbury USA; 1 edition (Jan 1 2007) Language: English Starred Review. On the burgeoning shelf of cautionary but occasionally alarmist books warning about the consequences of dramatic climate change, Kolbert's calmly persuasive reporting stands out for its sobering clarity. Expanding on a three-part series for the New Yorker, Kolbert (The Prophet of Love) lets facts rather than polemics tell the story: in essence, it's that Earth is now nearly as warm as it has been at any time in the last 420,000 years and is on the precipice of an unprecedented "climate regime, one with which modern humans have had no prior experience." An inexorable increase in the world's average temperature means that butterflies, which typically restrict themselves to well-defined climate zones, are now flitting where they've never been found before; that nearly every major glacier in the world is melting rapidly; and that the prescient Dutch are already preparing to let rising oceans reclaim some of their land. In her most pointed chapter, Kolbert chides the U.S. for refusing to sign on to the Kyoto Accord. In her most upbeat chapter, Kolbert singles out Burlington, Vt., for its impressive energy-saving campaign, which ought to be a model for the rest of the nation—just as this unbiased overview is a model for writing about an urgent environmental crisis. Paperback: 64 pages Publisher: Graf Editions (Jan 23 1999) Language: English From the Author If you have ever been in a small shop in Asia trying to buy a safety pin, you will understand why I created point it. The idea came to me during a vacation in India in 1976, where, because of the large number of languages and dialects and the low literacy rate, it is common to use symbols to express one's needs. During the next 16 years, I photographed many strange things while travelling, such as oxen and trucks serving as a bus. Sometimes it was very risky to photograph ordinary, non-tourist things, like passengers in an Indian taxi or Chinese policemen. I was arrested in Nigeria while photographing a jeep that, unfortunately, belonged to the chief of police. On the Trans-Siberian railway I was saved from misfortune by a French tour guide, who also spoke Russian and warned me that it was forbidden to photograph railway stations. In the Munich train station, a well-dressed woman asked why I photographed her compartment - she thought I was a detective sent by her husband!
