A Ducks Unlimited: Guide to Hunting Diving & Sea Ducks

A Ducks Unlimited: Guide to Hunting Diving & Sea Ducks

Hunting diving ducks (and sea ducks) is considered by many to be the most challenging form of waterfowling. In most cases, duck hunters must brave big rough water and freezing temperatures in pursuit of hardy, fast-flying birds that can elude even the best wingshooters. Yet the sport continues to draw legions of avid waterfowlers anxious to test their mettle against the elements and the birds. This is the first how-to guide devoted exclusively to hunting diving ducks such as canvasbacks, redheads, and greater and lesser scaup, and sea ducks such as bufflehead, scoters, and eider. Like its companion volume, "A Ducks Unlimited Guide to Hunting Dabblers, this new book will prove an invaluable resource for both novice and veteran waterfowlers. No other book has ever offered as much complete and in-depth information on how to hunt these big-water ducks, including: - Methods for hunting divers over decoys in rivers, big lakes, reservoirs, and ocean coastal areas. - Tactics for pass-shooting and hunting in layout boats and shore blinds. - Boats and other specialized equipment needed to pursue diving ducks. - Tactics for hunting early and late in the season. - How to scout and locate the best hunting spots. - And much, much more.

Don't Shoot the Decoys. Original Stories of Waterfowling Obsessions

Don't Shoot the Decoys. Original Stories of Waterfowling Obsessions

Waterfowlers may be passionate-even obsessive-about their sport, but at least they don't take themselves too seriously. That's because duck and goose hunting is so often a humbling experience. In that respect, these 20 stories by Doug Larson are like the classic wildfowl tales of, say, Gordon MacQuarrie-that is, they celebrate the sport of waterfowling while tickling the funny bone. But while Larson is in many ways a traditionalist when it comes to waterfowling-and storytelling-his voice is refreshingly new. Larson's subject, in fact, is the modern hunter's struggle to come to terms with the past while living fully in the present. For instance, while he expresses a love for the hardy duck chasers in canvas coats who humped dozens of cork decoys through mud and mire to secret blinds, he also admits "adapting" to the comforts and conveniences of four-wheel ATVs, portable blind heaters, hollow-body plastic decoys, and polyester "fleece" parkas. On the other hand, he takes pokes at the modern trend to overcomplicate the sport. "Whatever happened to throwing rocks?" he asks in a chapter on motion decoys. Though the book finds humor in the "small" moments associated with duck and goose hunting, it occasionally delivers a real zinger that will bring tears to the reader's eyes, as in the hilarious chapter titled "Concrete," in which Larsen discovers what can happen when a son takes his non-hunting dad waterfowling for the first time.

Decoys of Maritime Canada

Decoys of Maritime Canada

Decoys and their makers of the Canadian Maritime region can now be studied through the extensive research contained in this book. The region, including Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick, is actually the northern section of the Atlantic Flyway. Few of the many fine decoy carvers from these areas have been identified before, while the little information which has appeared often has been inaccurate. Maritime-Canadian decoys are available on the market and can be found in collections in the United States as well as Canada. Many of them are among the finest decoys made in North America.

The Decoy. by Jim Poling Sr.

The Decoy. by Jim Poling Sr.

The use of duck decoys in hunting was developed thousands of years ago by native North Americans. The skill of decoy carving was later passed on to Europeans upon their arrival in North America. By the late 1980s and 1990s, hand-made and antique decoys became full-fledged collector's items. Some rare decoys, in fact, have been sold for upwards of a quarter of a million dollars. In The Decoy, Jim Poling, Sr. explores the history of these fascinating artifacts. The Decoy includes 40 full-colour images from the private, and never-before-seen, decoy collection of Peter Brown, and 25 images from two of North America's oldest and best known decoy companies: Blackwater Decoys and Loon Lake Decoys. (2001)
About the Author Jim Poling, Sr. is the retired general manager and editor of The Canadian Press news agency. He is the author of The Canoe: An Illustrated History, also published by Key Porter Books, and is a frequent contributor to Cottage Life and Ontario Out of Doors magazines.
